Metal Room Dividers: The Ultimate Guide to Dividing Spaces with Style
We received a special order from the south of Chile, specifically from the city of Valdivia. Our client was looking for a functional and aesthetic solution for the core of their home: the staircase area leading to the second floor. Their vision was clear: they needed two pieces that would act as visual barriers, ensuring structural resistance without sacrificing decorative value.
In our creative process, we offer total flexibility: we can design a piece from scratch or work from a visual reference that connects with the client's style. On this occasion, the inspiration was nature: a design of birds on branches that captured their attention for its delicacy and dynamism.
After defining the pattern, we proceeded with the technical design and manufacturing of two custom panels. The final goal was millimeter precision, ensuring that each piece fit perfectly into its space, transforming a transit area into a focal point of metallic design.

The trend towards "open concept" design in modern architecture has transformed our homes into spacious and bright areas, but it has brought with it an unexpected challenge: the loss of specific functionality and intimacy.

Room dividers emerge not only as an aesthetic element, but as a strategic solution to three fundamental problems of interior design:
1.- Dividers allow for zoning the area, assigning a clear purpose to each corner without the need to erect permanent walls that steal light or space.
2.- Whether to hide a messy living room at the end of the day or to create a quiet reading nook in the middle of a family living room, these elements act as psychological and physical barriers that return control over their personal space to the user.
3.- A space that is too large can be perceived as empty or lacking personality. Dividers solve this problem by adding:
-
Texture and depth: They break the monotony of plain walls.
-
Play of light: They allow natural lighting to be filtered creatively.
-
Versatility: They offer a dynamic solution that can evolve with the inhabitant's needs.

When metal becomes the protagonist of space division, the result is an ideal combination of industrial strength and minimalist elegance. Decorative grilles, unlike conventional security grates, are designed for a purely architectural purpose. They are usually anchored from floor to ceiling or from a railing to the ceiling. Their visual effect is interesting as they create a clear physical separation but maintain total visual connection between rooms, which makes the space not appear smaller. These are their main characteristics, but there are other benefits:
-
Slender Structure: Metal has superior structural strength to any other material. This allows for much finer frames, achieving a minimalist and light aesthetic.
-
Infinite Durability: It does not deform with humidity, is not easily scratched, and does not require the constant maintenance (varnishes or oils) that wood demands. It is ideal for high-traffic areas or humid climates.
-
Light and Shadow Diffusion: Metal grilles, especially plasma-cut ones, create dynamic plays of shadow that change throughout the day, turning an empty wall into a natural "art installation."
-
Fire Resistance and Security: In addition to their decorative function, they offer a real and non-combustible physical barrier, providing extra protection compared to plastic or textile materials.

You can use natural waxes to care for steel or the oxidized interior finish. Applying a thin layer of beeswax once a year helps seal the pores and prevents atmospheric humidity from creating rust spots. A little isopropyl alcohol on a cloth removes fingerprints without leaving greasy traces. Any rust outbreaks can be sanded.
