The sign that invites you in: Esencial Concept Store & Coffee turned its facade into a meeting point in Castro, Chiloé

From the start, Romina envisioned Esencial as something distinct from a conventional store. Esencial Concept Store & Coffee is a space where coffee, design, friendships, and conversation blend naturally — a boutique with a soul, right in the center of Castro, Chiloé. The only thing it might have lacked in its early days was for the street and all of Chiloé to know of its existence. That's why she devised an excellent plan and chose two waxed rusted steel signs: one with her logo for the front of the facade and another mounted on a side bracket with the universal coffee symbol. At IronPig, we had the opportunity to help her realize her vision. We custom-made her two signs and shipped them to the south of Chile.

Why signs matter

There are businesses you can feel from a long way off. Esencial Concept Store & Coffee in Castro, Chiloé, is one of them — and its rusted steel signs have a lot to do with that. A soft, well-designed typeface to display a welcoming logo, natural material that ages with character, and a facade that says "come in, beautiful things happen here and the food is delicious" before you even open the door.

Romina is someone who enjoys and provides experiences, an entrepreneur from southern Chile with a collector's soul and a lot of character. She knows the power of details well — that's why when it came time to choose the sign for Esencial, she didn't want something ordinary. Her desire was to have a sign worthy of her project, that would last over time, with personality, and that would feel like a natural part of the place from day one.

The challenge: standing out in Chiloé

Castro has a very strong visual identity — colorful stilt houses, historic facades, architecture that is already heritage. Opening a contemporary design business there is not easy: you have to stand out without clashing, be modern without losing harmony with the place. The sign had to do that job and create a space for the community. Its purpose would be to stand out in Castro's scene mainly for its innovative "Design & Coffee" format, which merges a boutique coffee shop with an exclusive design store under one roof.

The solution: two rusted steel signs with a unique and attractive design that invite you in

It's the perfect place to take a slow pause. It allows customers to enjoy fine pastries or a warm break while exploring national and local artisan products — turning the simple act of going for coffee into a cultural and visually enriching stroll. For the appearance of the signs, they chose a welcoming and natural waxed rusted corten steel finish, cut with CNC. Two signs: one with the cursive "Esencial" logo typography for the top of the main facade, with the subtitle in an openwork box indicating the store's specialty. To this, they added a bracket-type sign with the universal coffee symbol. The waxed rusted patina ages well in Chiloé's humid climate, requires almost no maintenance, and has that artisanal character that fit perfectly with the establishment's identity.
